Material things. We need them. Whether you are a minimalist or maximalist or somewhere in between, living with the things that inspire and comfort, inform and enrich us, is one of life's pleasures.

Perhaps it's a favorite mug or pillow, a book read to you by a beloved grandparent, or the only known photograph of your father as a child. Or maybe it's a reproduction of a painting you spent hours staring at in a library, allowing yourself to be transported by its mystery and allure.

Whatever it is, we surround ourselves with things we love because they make our lives better. No one ever answers "Nothing" when asked what they'd save from a burning building. Our material lives are integral to who we are.
